Audio Score – Mcintosh C49 AC – Audio Components Review
Introduction
The Mcintosh C 49 is a two channel, high end audio preamplifier.
In the Mcintosh Line-Up it is currently the entry level model, with a price of around USD 5000. Before I start talking about the C49, a little bit of history on the manufacturer Mcintosh itself. Mcintosh was founded in 1949 and since then has been manufacturing remarkable audio products out of Binghamton New York. Most of their products are still handmade and among them are some very special one. This is one for example from Woodstock in 1969.
The C49 is a high-End product, not only for the sound, but also for the price.
Moving back to their current entry level C49, I am now going to talk about my own unit, which I bought last year at Hifi Audio in Düsseldorf. If you ever have the chance to check out hifi-audio in Düsseldorf, please do. They are not only very competent, but also have a huge selection of high-end stuff. For the last 20 years, I have been a happy customer and can highly recommend a personal visit or digital on: hifi-audio.de
Let’s start with the Audio Components Review of the McIntosh C49.
The Audio Scaleurs Sight & Sound Score, or The A3S-Score
Download the A3S-ScoreThis A3S – score review is quite simple, with 3 main chapters:
- The first part SIGHT focusses on the score of the device. Based on my personal experience, I will rate the preamp in various categories, give a score for the current value and the give it an audio-score. The total score is 40 points maximum.
- The second part focusses on the SOUND aspects of the device, with a maximum of 50 points.
- Last, we have the VALUE part, that accounts for 10 points.

Time for the Audio Components Review!
CONVENIENCE.
The C49 is very easy to use and can be fully controlled with the physical buttons on the face-plate or on the remote control. Since this is an audio-only unit, there is no need for any difficult and twisted on screen menu, but simply an LED display right at the center of the device. The packaging of the device is typical for a Mcintosh product and therefore excellent. The C49 weighs 17 pounds, which makes it heavy for a 2-channel pre-amp, but not too heavy for anyone to carry it around. Since there is really nothing to complain about, the unit is very easy and intuitive to use and it has a very good remote control, the C49 deserves an 8 out of 10.
LOOKS.
In my personal opinion the C49 is beautiful. Because of its front plate glass, which is also LED backlit, the C49 looks great during the day and amazing when its dark. The design is rather simplistic and traditional, without any meters, or multiple chassis, which I don’t criticize. The C49 also has the traditional Mcintosh silver bars, which allow it to perfectly integrate into other Mcintosh units to complete the overall design. Mcintosh changed the design of the bars about 20 years ago and since then they remained unchanged. For me, the C49 is a beautiful, simple and elegant preamplifier and it deserves a 7 out of 10.
QUALITY.
The build quality of the C49 is excellent. Not only are the connectors very sturdy and gold plated at the back of the device, also the knobs and buttons are of very high quality. I would give it a 9 out of 10, just short of the very best. However, the remote is practical and good, but simply not good enough for a 5000 USD unit. This leads to a quality score of 8 out of 10.
FEATURES.
For a stereo preamplifier the features are good. The C49 lacks an equalizer and room correction. Besides that, it is pretty well equipped with a removable and upgradeable DAC, USB input, multiple balanced and unbalanced in and outputs and a very decent phono section. It also perfectly acts as a stereo audio control center, with its passthrough functionality. The trigger connectors also enable the remote to control other Mcintosh and some third-party devices such as sources or Amps. Let’s not forget the headphone section, which is also good. For features this earns the 2-channel preamp a 6 out of ten.
TOTAL.
Summing up the Eyes and Hands part, the unit comes in at 28 out of 40 points, which is a decent score for a 2-channel preamplifier, especially at this price range.
AUDIO EXCELLENCE.
Moving over to the very important SOUND-section, I start with the technical specifications and audio excellence. The C49, like most of the Mcintosh products, is an excellently engineered piece of equipment. It shares most of its components with its bigger brother the C53, although it doesn’t offer the full feature set. The C49 is built in a one-box, though split alignment separating the power and analog sections from the digital ones. This reduces noise and interference significantly and leads to a Total Harmonic distortion of 0,005%.
The Signal to noise ratio for high level is 100 DB and even the MM number is above 80 coming in at 82. These numbers are truly high end and there is nothing to complain about. For Audio Excellence it receives a very high 8 out of 10, just short of fully balanced designs and true-multi chassis rivals.
DETAIL.
Next up is the level of detail in the sound and to keep it interesting, I am going to focus mainly on the DA1 DAC section here. The level of detail and positive sharpness the C49 pulls out of CD and SACD sources is simply astonishing. This is truly a step up from many other preamps in this prize range and I really missed something going back to other models. For detail, contours in bass and separation of instrument, the C49 also earns a very strong 8 out of 10. There are not many preamps, that have given me more in this regard.
IMAGING.
For imaging, I am giving it a 7 out of 10. No question, the preamp is dead-quiet and pulls out a very focused sound stage. However, rivals in this class can sound a little bit more rounded. This is personal taste and on a very high level, since there is not really anything to complain about. My go-to- imaging album is usually Billie-Eilish’s “When we all fall asleep…” and the C49 overwhelms me with its clarity, but not with its soundstage. It’s very good, but no excellent. Scaleurs tipp- check out Ilomino, close your eyes and turn it up a little. There should be a wall of sound surrounding you with this preamp.
BASS.
The bass is tight, grippy and punchy, never boomy, too little or too much. It earns a 7 out of 10.
OVERALL.
The audio score also has one more category which is called synergy. The sum of the 3 categories can either be the same score, better or worse. For the C49, simply due to the excellent DAC and phono section, it’s sound versatility and Mcintosh presentation is very strong in this regard. Not only does it have a little of that Mcintosh bloom and comfort, but it also combines it with a level of detail, which extremely rare and hard to beat. This makes the C49 a very consistent and coherent device, which demands a lot from its audio-teammates. Therefore, it earns an 8 out of 10.
TOTAL.
For the SOUND, the C49 comes in at 38 out 50.
The last category puts the C49 into some perspective. The C49 comes in around 5-6000 Euros or USD and is the current model. You can find it on the used marked with a 4 as a first digit, but that’s about it. This makes the C49 a high-End product, not only for the sound, but also for the price. However, if you have the Cash, short list it, test it and consider keeping it.
It is significantly cheaper than the bigger brother and sonically doesn’t disappoint in an A/B.
For price to Value it earns a 6 out of 10, which is massive for such a high-end two channel device.
Add it all up and the scores are 29+38+6= 73 out of 100.

certainly like your web-site but you have to take a look at the spelling on several of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling issues and I in finding it very bothersome to tell the truth however I will certainly come back again. Bird Chrissie Schweiker
